Resolution: How Many Pixels Are Actually on the Screen
Resolution describes the total number of pixels arranged across and down a screen. More pixels generally means finer detail — but context matters.
- HD (720p): 1,280 × 720 pixels. Found on smaller or entry-level sets; noticeable softness on screens 40 inches and larger.
- Full HD (1080p): 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. Long the mainstream standard, still adequate for screens up to roughly 55 inches at typical viewing distances.
- 4K (Ultra HD): 3,840 × 2,160 pixels — four times the pixel count of 1080p. The dominant standard for new TVs; most streaming services and disc formats now support it natively.
- 8K: 7,680 × 4,320 pixels. Commercially available but native 8K content remains extremely limited.
Resolution interacts with viewing distance and screen size. On a 55-inch display viewed from 8 feet away, the human eye cannot easily distinguish 4K from 1080p. Sitting closer or choosing a larger screen makes the difference more apparent.

Refresh Rate: How Smoothly Motion Appears
Refresh rate measures how many times per second a panel redraws its image, expressed in hertz (Hz). A higher native refresh rate reduces motion blur and makes fast action — sports, gaming, action films — look smoother.
- 60Hz: Standard for most broadcast and streaming content. Adequate for everyday TV viewing.
- 120Hz: The current performance benchmark. Noticeably smoother during fast motion; also required for 4K/120fps gaming on current gaming consoles.
Watch out for marketing labels. Terms such as "Motion Rate," "TruMotion," or "CMR" are manufacturer-specific figures that can represent values much higher than the panel's actual native refresh rate. When evaluating a set, look specifically for the native refresh rate in the specifications.
Motion interpolation (also called "soap opera effect"): Many sets artificially smooth motion by inserting generated frames. This processing can make film content look unnatural. Most TVs let you reduce or disable this feature through the picture settings menu.

The panel technology determines how a TV produces light and color — arguably more influential on everyday picture quality than resolution alone.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
The foundational technology in most TVs. A backlight shines through a liquid crystal layer that controls how much light passes through each pixel. LCD is energy-efficient and durable, but the backlight can "bleed" into dark areas of the screen, limiting contrast.
QLED
A marketing term (primarily associated with certain manufacturers) for an LCD panel enhanced with a quantum dot filter. The filter improves color volume and peak brightness compared with standard LCD but still relies on a backlight, so contrast limitations apply.
OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode)
Each pixel generates its own light independently. When displaying black, those pixels switch off entirely, achieving theoretically infinite contrast ratios. OLEDs excel at dark-room viewing and wide viewing angles. The tradeoff: they typically have lower peak brightness than high-end LCD panels, and there is a small risk of permanent image retention (burn-in) from static content displayed for extended periods.
Mini-LED
An LCD variant using thousands of very small LEDs for the backlight, divided into independently controllable dimming zones. This significantly improves local contrast compared with conventional LCD while reaching high peak brightness levels.

OLED

QLED

Mini-LED
An advanced LCD backlight system using thousands of tiny LEDs grouped into individually controllable dimming zones, improving local contrast and peak brightness over conventional LCD.
Motion Interpolation
A TV processing feature that inserts artificially generated frames between real ones to create the appearance of smoother motion. Often called the "soap opera effect" because it can make cinematic content look unnatural.
Local Dimming
A backlight technique that reduces brightness in specific zones of an LCD panel when displaying dark content, improving contrast without requiring full-screen dimming.
